The following is under review by the Parish Councils of OLPH and St. Philip.
Parents have the primary responsibility for the faith and spiritual development for their children. Therefore, our parish
requires active parental participation in our parish sacramental programs. Parents/students must meet the specific requirements
for each sacrament as well as the following general policies:
* Parents and /or students are to be active members of the parish for a minimum of one year prior to sacramental
reception.
* Mass attendance on a regular basis is required for students and their Catholic Parents.
* Student attendance of religious education classes for a minimum of one year prior to reception of the sacrament.
* Parents are required to attend all parent preparation classes for the specific sacrament.
* Student interview of discernment will take place prior to reception of the sacrament.
* Minimal age for First Eucharist is 7 years.
* Confirmation preparation classes include students from grades 9,10,11 and 12.
BAPTISM
Parents attend baptismal preparation classes before the child id baptized. if they have previously attended classes, the
interval must be no more than four years. Godparents need to attend classes as well. Classes include a study of theology
of the sacrament, ritual and parenting. Scheduling of Baptism is with the Deacon or Pastor.
EUCHARIST: (Age 7/8; second grade)
Parent/student classes are scheduled by the DRE. Parish CCD classes in the second grade emphasize Eucharist and Mass,
but all grades include some classes on the sacraments. Sacramental preparation classes are aimed specifically at Eucharist
and include some study of Baptism and Reconciliation as well. First Communion may be celebrated with the family, at group
Solemn Communion or both. Individual First Communion is at the discretion of the parents (Family celebration.) The Parish
celebration of Solemn Communion is held in late spring. (usually last week of April for OLPH and the previous week for St.
Philip.)
RECONCILIATION: (Age 8-10: third or fourth grade or at discretion of the parents)
All CCD grade levels have classes on reconciliation during Lent designed to reinforce the teaching of parents, especially
the third and fourth grades. During Advent and Lent, there are Parish Communal Penance Services that families can attend.
Also just prior to Solemn Communion, there is a Children's Reconciliation Service. All those attending are invited to celebrate
the sacrament.
CONFIRMATION: (Grades 9,10,11 & 12; Adults would attend
RCIA) Confirmation is usually celebrated every three years to be able to meet the requirement number of participants by
the Archdiocese for the bishop to celebrate it at our Parish.
Parents and students are required to attend the initial
information meeting. Parents will be expected to assist in the program as needed. Students must demonstrate active participation
in their faith for a minimum of one year by fulfilling the following requirements:
* Regular Mass attendance and participation
* Regular class and activity attendance
* Meet all the requisites of the Parish's Christian Service Program(development
and execution by students) prior to being confirmed.
* Retreat attendance
* Discernment Interview
Confirmation
is scheduled in the spring.
MARRIAGE:
At least six months notice required. Couple meet with Pastor/Deacon to determine maturity for marriage, freedom to marry,
Baptismal and other sacramental status, etc. Couple participate and complete the Marriage preparation program provided by
the parish.
QUINCINERARA:
The family must be active members of the Parish for one year prior to the celebration. They must attend Mass on a regular
basis. The girl must be involved in the Parish Youth Group for at least a year previous to the Celebration.
